Mists Moving Over the Mountain
Returning
Curious, spirited and magic. So we begin; And each day I continue: with a prayer, a reading, an arrangement, a recipe—a walk in the woods. In all of this, I am in relationship—a profound one; and if I listen and respond, I have lot to share. Such is life and breath. On this site, you’ll find blog posts, garden tips, observations, questions, nature visions (and revisions), quotes, glimpses, prompts, and nods of affirmation, awe and respect.
Naturalist Mike Ather walked with us through roadside and woods of Lincoln, September 5. We are scheduling another walk at Vermont’s Intervale late September (maybe the 25th), and again in the spring. Clinical Herbalist Marguerite Gregory will take us through a lovely and bountiful herb sanctuary in Hinesburg/Starksboro in fall and spring. We are arranging a Circle of Elders—and there is Sharing Circle in Lincoln every other week or so. Next summer, we hope to make real the Abenaki Story, History and Language day we’d planned just before the pandemic. Stay tuned here, or reach out via Facebook or Instagram. Or really…just call me at 802-793-6006.
Starting all over: with an unknown destination. First, I’m back to reading Gaia’s Garden by Toby Hemmenway and Teaming With Microbes by Jeff Lowenfels. Both excellent books that I highly recommend getting from your local bookstore/library. I’m sketching shapes and making lists of what/who is here on these new (to me) lands. I learned so much from working a decade on the farm—now I know a bit more about what to do and what NOT to do? I’m also doing lots of math: how much are pullets vs. chicks? How much to feed them all year long? Electricity in the winter? Water sources…etc. Can I buy three sheep? How much is the fencing?; what is best?; what can I afford? Truly, I can’t really “afford” any of it: but its in my bones—I can’t afford NOT to. This is my link (connection) with the world, the earth, the universe, the great question we are a part of.

Here and there I’ll offer a little music. This one goes with my “Returning to Homesteading” journey. So much joy in my heart.
A few notes from sunset/evening gazing. Thank you to Olivia Marone for offering the closest to visually capturing what I was trying to poetically phrase somehow.
Herbcrafting is one of my great loves. Here on this high land, we plant and tend and harvest and prepare. Botanica is how I think to it: a life and love of the plants, trees, flowers and herbs. The bees and butterflies. The sheep who gently graze…and walk among the clover, chickweed, bedstraw and burdock. I am in awe of all. They are my family.

Early April, I walked the winding path from the barn to the garden with my friend Jeannie who had just taken the Vermont Master Naturalist course in Washington County—and was soooooo excited to traverse the forest and discover. Canada May Flower, Starflower, and Trout Lily. Along the roadside, Coltsfoot, Heartleaf Foamflower, Smooth Solomon’s Seal.
And the Woodland Forget-me-Not.
